"HOUSTON -
A Bellaire police officer and an innocent bystander were shot and killed by a suspect in a southwest Houston parking lot Monday, officials said.
Investigators said Cpl. Jimmie Norman, 53, was chasing the suspect, Harlem Harold Lewis, 21, when they drove into the parking lot of a Maaco body shop at 5611 Bellaire Blvd. at Alder at 8:55 a.m. Witnesses said Lewis got out of his vehicle and began firing shots.
"The guy stands up out the car and just starts shooting. The gunshots continued even as I ran off. After the first 10, I was thinking, 'What kind of gun does this guy have?'" witness Stephanie Pacheco said.

Another witness, Selvin Romero said Lewis side-swiped his pickup truck. He said he followed Lewis into the driveway of the body shop.
He said he saw Norman, a 24-year-veteran of the force, approach Lewis' car in an effort to get him to surrender. But within seconds, police said the Lewis pulled a gun and opened fire on the married father of two.
"He started shooting the officer, and then he started shooting the owner of the body shop," said Romero.
The owner of the body shop, Terry Taylor, who loved ones said walked out of his shop to help the officer, was fatally shot in the head by Lewis at close range. Police said he died instantly.
Family members said Taylor was a retired army vet, a married father and a new grandfather.
Norman was taken to Ben Taub Hospital, where he died a short time later. He did not exchange gunfire with the suspect, HPD said.
"The saddest thing is that (Officer Norman) didn't even get an opportunity to pull his weapon and defend himself. That's how fast it all happened," said John Cannon with the Houston Police Department.
"The police officer is inside the door. He got hit first. You see him hit the ground on his back. The guy gets out the car and just starts shooting and we hit the ground," Pacheco said.
Houston police said Lewis fired at responding Bellaire police officers.
"They hear gunshots and they see the suspect standing near their fallen officer and they exchange gunfire with the suspect," Cannon said.
Lewis was wounded and ran off, but was found behind a nearby business. Investigators said a gun was recovered from the scene.
Lewis was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital in critical but stable condition. Doctors said he is expected to survive. Charges of capital murder of a police officer and murder are pending.
No other officers were wounded.
"He pretty much at close-bank range murdered a Bellaire police officer and murdered an innocent bystander who emerged from the shop," Cannon said.

Community activist Quanell X visited Lewis in the hospital. He said he's known Lewis for years, and said he's had behavioral issues and his family was concerned about his drug use. He said the suspect's family is devastated by the news.
"The family wants to extend their deepest, deepest sympathy to the victim's family. The family is absolutely heartbroken about what their son is accused of," Quanell X said.
"Jimmie had a police mind and a big heart. His heart was as big as anybody I ever worked with. He was always thinking about things that would better the department, better the city, better the working conditions of officers and the way we could serve the citizens of Bellaire," Bellaire Police Chief Byron Holloway said. "Words can't express what the men and women of the Bellaire Police Department are feeling today."
Cpl. Norman was the first Bellaire police officer to be killed in the line of duty.
"He was someone that you would want as your neighbor," Holloway said.
The suspect has been charged with capital murder."

Pennsylvania Shooting Update: Friend says alleged gunman was focused on end-of-the-world predictions.

Date/Time: 12/21/2012 - Around 9:00 A.M.
Location: Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania
Victims: Three killed, three injured
Suspect: Jeffrey Lee Michael(44), deceased

"(CBS/AP) HOLLIDAYSBURG, Pa. - A friend of a central Pennsylvania man who killed three people before dying in a gun battle with police on Dec. 21 says the shooter had been struggling with personal problems and had become fascinated with end-of-the-world predictions.
Bob Socie of Lakemont, a longtime friend of Jeffrey Lee Michael's, told The (Altoona) Mirror that Michael, 44, had struggled for years with stress from two accidents involving his tractor-trailer and a divorce and custody battle. Recently, he said, Michael was focused on apocalyptic predictions stemming from biblical prophecy and an ancient Mayan calendar.
Several hundred people packed the Geeseytown Evangelical Lutheran Church on Saturday night for a prayer service remembering 58-year-old Kimberly Scott of Duncansville; 60-year-old Kenneth Lynn, and his 38-year-old son-in-law William Rhodes Jr., killed Friday morning by  Michael
Michael killed 58-year-old Kimberly Scott as he entered Juniata Valley Gospel Church, State Police Sgt. Gregory Bernard said. Either shortly before or after that, Kenneth Lynn, 60, a neighbor of Michael's, was shot in the driveway of his home.
Bernard said Michael drove his pickup truck along rural Juniata Valley Road and intentionally rammed another pickup driven by Lynn's son-in-law, 38-year-old William Rhodes Jr. Police said Rhodes died of blunt force trauma from the crash and a gunshot wound.
Michael opened fire on two state police cars that were heading his way, police said. A trooper was injured in the face by flying glass from the windshield and possibly a graze from the bullet.
A third patrol car arrived and tried to block the path of the pickup, which rammed the car head-on and injured the trooper driving the vehicle, police said. One of the other patrol cars then rammed the back of the suspect's truck, and a gunfight with the first two troopers ensued. One was hit in the chest and wrist.
Michael was struck by police gunfire and was pronounced dead at the scene. The three troopers were treated at a hospital but are expected to be all right, authorities said.
The district attorney's office classified Michael's death as a justifiable homicide and said it would not pursue criminal charges against the troopers.
Police have not released information about the weapon or weapons used by Michael. Bernard said police had had some contact with Michael but declined to go into detail.
"We've had other incidents, but nothing to this extent," the sergeant said. Online court records show no criminal record for him in Pennsylvania or in the state's federal courts."

Brandon Lincoln Woodard Murder Linked To Mexican Cocaine Ripoff, Sources Say.

Date/Time: 12/10/2012 - Afternoon
Location: Midtown, New York
Victims: One killed
Suspect: Unknown

By Joe Parziale, DNAinfo Reporter/Producer

"MIDTOWN — A ripoff involving hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of cocaine from Mexico was the motive behind the brazen execution of Los Angeles law student Brandon Woodard in the heart of Midtown earlier this month, DNAinfo.com New York has learned.
Law enforcement sources said that the killers — believed to be part of a Queens drug crew — paid "a substantial amount of cash," but never received their shipment of cocaine from the West Coast and were fed up waiting for it.
Woodard was lured to his death on West 58th Street near Seventh Avenue where he was shot in the back of the head in broad daylight.
Sources said the federal Drug Enforcement Administration has joined the probe, considering the bicoastal aspects of the slaying, and its ties to other violence and murders.
"It is really not a homicide investigation," one source said. "It has become a major narcotics case involving a big operation and substantial money, perhaps millions of dollars."
The DEA is providing intelligence and resources to the NYPD about drug trafficking here and on the West Coast, and into possible connection reaching to drug distributors out of the nation of Jamaica, sources said.
Meanwhile, sources told “On the Inside” the NYPD is getting closer to identifying the cold-blooded killer who calmly pumped a bullet from a .9mm handgun into the back of Woodard’s head as he was lured to his death last week.
The NYPD has already identified the driver of the getaway car, DNAinfo.com New York previously reported.
Authorities suspect both the killer and the driver of the rented Lincoln MKZ are low-level Queens thugs with arrest records for drugs who are part of a powerful crew whose members they are trying to identify.
Neither of the possible suspects has been picked up and questioned as authorities are taking their time gathering evidence to make sure they have a strong case against them and that no false steps are made.
Woodard, who also has a lengthy criminal record including for dealing cocaine, was apparently a middleman or courier in the drug deal that went bad, sources explained.
“The Los Angeles guys thought they were tough, and could f--- with the boys from New York,” one source told “On The Inside.”
They were dead wrong.
“They screwed with the wrong people,” the source said.
"These guys move a lot of money and a lot of product," another source said.
DNAinfo.com New York previously reported that Woodward’s killing had ties to several other murders and shootings.
One of three cellphones found on Woodard was linked to a Brooklyn club promoter, who was an acquaintance of three men who were assassinated earlier this year after a party.
Those victims, each packing guns, were lured to a Queens schoolyard and executed in a fusillade of AK-47 automatic gunfire as they sat in a Jeep.
Investigators believed those killing had ties to marijuana and possibly cocaine trafficking out of the island of Jamaica — and the DEA is also providing intelligence related to Caribbean traffickers.
In addition, a single shell found at the West 58th Street crime scene matched bullets sprayed into a Queens home in 2009. A man who lived there at the time — and was a possible target — was involved in a fight on Staten Island earlier this year. A few days later, his attacker with was shot and killed.
Woodard’s brutal assassination was captured on several videos that were released by the NYPD.  Images of the Lincoln getaway car were later captured heading into Queens from the Queens-Midtown Tunnel, police said.
The woman who rented the car told investigators she gave it to another man, who in turn insists he lent it to someone else. Neither is considered a suspect."

Two Officers Shot And Killed In Topeka, Suspect Shot And Killed.

Victims: Two killed
Suspect: David Edward Tiscareno(22), Deceased

By WIBW News

"Officials confirmed Monday that the man suspected of killing two Topeka Police Officers, David Edward Tiscareno, 22, was shot and killed by KBI personnel Monday morning.
In a news conference Monday afternoon, Police Chief Ron Miller was joined by Shawnee County Sheriff Herman Jones, KBI Deputy Directory Kyle Smith, and Shawnee County District Attorney Chad Taylor.
Sheriff Jones clarified a few details about the shootings Sunday at Dillons, and the Monday morning standoff with Tiscareno. He said the 911 suspicious vehicle call Sunday evening was placed by someone who thought there was drug activity going on in a vehicle in the grocery store parking lot.
Two officers were in the area and responded. Those were CPL David Gogian and OFC Jeff Atherly. A third officer - who will not be identified, Herman said - also assisted in response.
Herman said Gogian and Atherly were asking three people inside the suspicious vehicle to exit the car. He says that's when Tiscareno, a passenger in the back seat, shot the two officers in the head, then got into the driver's seat and drove the car to the 400 block of Buchanan. The other two that were in the vehicle were taken in for questioning, but not charged with anything.
After Midnight, authorities say a citizen called in with a tip that Tiscareno was in an apartment home at 3rd and Western Avenue. Authorities surrounded the area and the KBI's High Risk Warrant team joined authorities on the scene.
Jones said just before 6:30 a.m., when Tiscareno was exiting the home, he had a gun in hand and fired one shot. Authorities responded with several shots, which ultimately left Tiscareno with life-threatening gunshot wounds.
Information released by the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office at 8:30 a.m. Monday:
Early this morning, police received information from a citizen in Topeka on where the suspect in the shooting of two Topeka police officers might be located.
The Topeka Police Department and Shawnee Sheriff’s Office secured a perimeter and requested assistance from the KBI High Risk Response Team, due to local officers having been the victims. The KBI responded to the 300 block of Western.
The KBI attempted to negotiate with the suspect inside of the residence.
At approximately 6:00 a.m., after numerous attempts to make contact with the individual, gas was deployed, and the suspect came out of the home carrying a gun. Shots were fired by law enforcement, and the suspect was hit and transported to a local hospital for treatment.
It is unknown at this time if the suspect fired the gun he was carrying.
The suspect was pronounced dead from his injuries at the hospital.
In accordance with standard procedure, the identity of the individual will be withheld pending positive identification and notification of the family. The KBI is investigating the incident.
A press conference is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the Law Enforcement Center, 320 S. Kansas Ave. and further details will be provided at that time.
Earlier Reports:
Police confirmed Sunday night that two Topeka Police Officers died after being shot while responding to reports of a suspicious vehicle at a Dillons grocery store in central Topeka.
Topeka Police confirmed Sunday that CPL David Gogian and Officer Jeff Atherly were both killed in the line of duty.
Police identified the suspected shooter as David Edward Tiscareno, 22, of Topeka. He is considered armed and extremely dangerous.
Police continued searching for Tiscareno early Monday morning.
Shooting Information:
Three officers responded to 1400 SW Huntoon St. on reports of a suspicious vehicle around 6:09 p.m. Sunday.
Within minutes of arrival on scene, the officers reported that shots were fired.
Two of three responding officers were shot, and at that point suffering life-threatening gunshot wounds. Both were taken to a Topeka hospital where they died.
Following the shooting, officers from multiple law enforcement agencies responded. The parking lot of the Dillons store was roped off as a crime scene.
Suspect Manhunt Details:
Authorities surrounded a home in the 400 block of Buchanan in Topeka Sunday during the 8 p.m. hour, where the suspect's vehicle was found. It was searched and the suspect was not located.
Authorities told 13 News the scene was cleared by 9:30 p.m. and police were moving to another location at 12th and Topeka Boulevard.
Police were surrounding an area near 12th and Topeka Boulevard in the 9 p.m. hour Sunday.
13's Justin Surrency reported a SWAT Team huddled in the parking lot of Capitol Federal Savings, preparing to enter a nearby apartment complex, located at 1255 S. Topeka Boulevard.
A person who reported himself as a neighbor of the shooting suspect told 13 News that Tiscareno attempted to rob him at gunpoint 6 months ago. That information was not confirmed by police Sunday night.
The SWAT team swept the apartment building, as a spotlight lit it from the outside. After hours on scene, police cleared the apartment building just after 1 a.m. Monday.
Efforts to locate the suspect continued into the early hours Monday morning, as law enforcement checked a home near 3rd and Western Ave. The location is close to the home officers responded to at 400 and Buchanan earlier in the night.
13 News crews said officers with guns drawn knocked on the door of a home on Western for several minutes with no response in the 2 a.m. hour.
A time later, 13 News crews reported hearing glass break toward the back of the home. Officers then reportedly brought four people out of the home before re-entering the property.
It was unknown Monday morning if the suspect fired the gun he was carrying.
The suspect was pronounced dead from his injuries at the hospital.
Because Topeka Police Officers were involved in the shooting Sunday night, the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office has taken over the investigation.

A witness told 13 News the shooting happened just outside the entrance of Dillons. The witness said he heard three gun clips emptied- then heard another series of shots.
A neighbor told Ann Bush, of the Topeka Capital-Journal, that he heard several shots. The neighbor said he looked out the window and saw an officer shot on the ground. The same neighbor told Bush he saw another officer standing near with hands on his head.
Bush was posting updates from the scene to her Twitter account Sunday night.
Topeka Councilman Chad Manspeaker took to Twitter following the shooting Sunday.
"Appears there has been a shooting at Dillons in our neighborhood," Manspeaker said on Twitter around 6:35 p.m. "Sheriffs, TPD, Troopers and Topeka Fire all on the scene at Dillons. Customers locked in the store. Parking lot a crime scene."
About an hour later he said," I am speechless. That Dillon's is a safe place. My heart hurts for our emergency responders."
A few dozen people set-up a candlelight vigil at Topeka's Law Enforcement Center at 320 S. Kansas Ave. late Sunday night."

Details, but no answers, in Oregon mall shooting.

Date/Time: 12/11/2012 - 3:30 P.M.
Location: Portland, Oregon
Victims: Two killed, one injured
Suspect: Jacob Tyler Roberts(22), Deceased

Suspect

 Victims

By CNN

"(CNN) -- The gunman shot three people on the second floor of an Oregon mall, then ran.
Shoppers hid behind racks as the man, wearing a vest and a mask, ran down a corridor and to a back hallway that led downstairs.
By then, he likely heard the sirens as dozens of police vehicles converged on the Clackamas Town Center in Happy Valley.
He then took his own life.
As details of Tuesday's mall shooting emerged, the question of motive remained unanswered.

At a news conference on Wednesday, investigators identified Jacob Tyler Roberts, 22, as the lone suspect in the shootings -- two of which proved fatal -- at the suburban Portland mall.
Sheriff's investigators said there was no apparent connection between Roberts and any of his victims.
The fatalities were identified as Cindy Ann Yuille, 54, and Steven Mathew Forsyth, 45.

The incident unfolded during the afternoon as the gunman moved quickly through the Macy's at the mall and toward the food court on the second floor, where he opened fire, the sheriff's office said.
The arrival of police within a minute of receiving the first calls of the shooting may have influenced the gunman's ultimate course of action, Sheriff Craig Roberts said.
The gunman was wearing a load-bearing vest -- a military-style garment designed to carry heavy equipment, which some witnesses confused with a bulletproof vest -- and was carrying a semi-automatic rifle.
At one point, the rifle jammed but started working again, the sheriff said.
Kristina Shevchenko, 15, was taken to the Oregon Health & Science University Hospital, where she was in serious, stable condition on Wednesday with a bullet wound to her chest, her surgeon told reporters.
Shevchenko, who suffered a collapsed right lung and injuries to her liver, underwent an hourlong operation Tuesday night to remove bullet fragments and was in the hospital's intensive care unit, Dr. Laszlo Kiraly said.
He said he was optimistic that she would recover fully but added that she was in shock and at risk for complications, including infection. "She's a very brave young woman," he said, adding that she was awake and talking to her family.
Further surgeries will focus on closing her wounds "and getting her to heal properly," he said. "I would anticipate that she would be with us for about a week or so."
Friends of the gunman said they were shocked when they heard who the shooter was.
"This is more than a tragic event, and my heart goes out to everyone affected by it, but I also feel as if the side of Jake that I remember needs to be shared," said Erin Philpot, a friend of the shooter, in an e-mail to CNN.
"He was a very loved individual that always seemed as if he had great intentions and a heart of gold. I know that must be hard for people to see/think/understand, but It's the truth. I don't know what caused him to do such a horrendous, terrible thing, but I do hope that somehow answers will be available to us all."
Philpot, who attended middle school and high school with Roberts, said he had recently broken up with a girlfriend and was considering moving to Hawaii. "I just had drinks with him in November, and he had just moved into a new place and was totally stoked about it," she said. "I can't believe he did this."
Jordan Salazar, who attended Milwaukie High School in the Portland area with Roberts, said in an e-mail, "He was a really nice guy, and it's completely shocking he did this."
She added, "He was a popular guy in high school and had a lot of friends," she said. "I was pretty much in shock with all of this."

Roberts attended Milwaukie High School for three years but did not graduate, said Joe Krumm, the director of community relations for North Clackamas County School District. "Average talent, average grades," Krumm said about Roberts, who was in a mainstream program and had no record of discipline issues or extracurricular activities.
Roberts then transferred to another district and graduated in 2008 from Oregon City High School, the school said in a statement on its website that also talked about the killings.
"This news is very shocking to those who knew Jacob while at OCHS," the statement said. "He was known as a soft-spoken and polite young man who was often eager to be helpful. The motive for such a horrific act is likely to remain a mystery to us all."
The families of the victims who died -- Yuille and Forsyth -- provided brief comments through authorities but asked for privacy as they mourn.
Yuille was remembered as "everybody's friend" who put others first.
Forsyth had two children, a great sense of humor and a zest for life, his family said.
During the shooting, mall patrons said they had no clue where the gunman would fire next.
Entire swaths of Clackamas Town Center became silent except for the rifle blasts and screams. Even the mall's Santa dropped to the ground.
"I thought I was going to die," mall employee David Moran said. "The gunshots were so loud, it was very scary. ... Kids were crying. Parents were crying, too."
Kira Rowland was holding her 6-month-old baby in Macy's when the shots rang out.
"I threw my baby into the stroller and just started running, because everybody was screaming and everybody just started to run," she said.

The gunman wore a hockey mask and jogged through Macy's wielding a rifle, a woman told CNN affiliate KOIN.
As some panicked customers bolted for the exits, others ducked under store counters or hid behind clothing racks.
"I am the shooter," he said as he ran through Macy's, said witness and store employee Austin Patty.
As the shooting started, Patty ran from the store, warning all in earshot that a shooter was loose and ordering them out of the store.
The sheriff's office said a rifle and a mask were recovered from the scene.
Investigators were reviewing surveillance footage to get a better picture of what happened.
Erin Quackenbush-Baker was with her grandmother and three children at a kiosk in the middle of the mall when she heard the shots.
"My 5-year-old was covering her ears and crying. I was frantic to find a place to run, and I looked back -- my son in my stroller and glass is falling over us," she said. "The shots were getting closer."
She added, "I felt like sitting ducks where we were."

During a brief halt in the gunfire, a man helped hustle the family members into a cosmetics store, where they hid for an hour "waiting to see if we were going to be shot or not."
As word spread that the shooter was moving from store to store, customers at Sears burst into tears, Christina Fisher told KOIN.
"We were told to stand in a group by the top of the escalators and stay away from the windows out of the aisle. ... We stood there for probably a good 20 minutes," she said. "All of the sudden, somebody came through with a radio, yelling, 'Get down!' "
As the mayhem unfolded, some customers watched television reports about the shooting from inside the Sears entertainment center, Tylor Pedersen told affiliate KGW.
Antonio Charro spotted a wounded woman near a cell phone store and tried to help.
"She had apparently been shot in the chest, and I couldn't get her turned over to help her," said Charro, who had been shopping at the mall with his daughters. "There was no one around. She wasn't breathing."
Clackamas County Sheriff Craig Roberts said about 10,000 people were in the mall at the time.
No law enforcement officers fired any shots when they arrived, sheriff's Sgt. Adam Phillips said.
The 1.4 million-square-foot mall remained closed Wednesday as investigators looked for clues about the attack.
Rowland said she's grateful she got distracted while shopping and didn't venture farther into the mall.
"I think if I hadn't stopped to smell that perfume, that maybe me and my baby wouldn't be here today."
CNN's Meridith Edwards, Catherine E. Shoichet, Cristy Lenz, Chandler Friedman, Michael Martinez, Tom Watkins and AnneClaire Stapleton contributed to this report."

Newport Beach mall shooter called 'destitute'.

Date/Time: 12/15/2012 - 4:30 P.M.
Location: Newport Beach, California
Victims: None
Suspect: Marcos Gurrola(42), Arrested

By the LA Times

"The gunman who fired more than 50 rounds at busy Fashion Island shopping center in Newport Beach on Saturday was described by police as a "destitute individual" who decided that "this was his way of venting his life problems."
Marcos Gurrola, 42, is accused of firing a semiautomatic handgun dozens of times into the air before he was taken into custody, authorities said. No one was wounded in the shooting, although one person was injured fleeing to safety.
"Thank God he pointed up," Newport Beach Police Deputy Chief David McGill said. "Luck was on our side."
As investigators worked to determine a motive, McGill characterized Gurrola as someone who was "unhappy about a lot in life and decided this was his best way of releasing his tension."
Gurrola, who was booked in Orange County Jail on suspicion of shooting at an inhabited dwelling, appeared to be unemployed, McGill said. He could not confirm reports that the suspect was living in his car, but said the vehicle had "a lot of personal items" inside.
Gurrola did not appear to have a criminal history in California. State records showed he was a registered guard-patrolman with the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, an arm of the state Department of Consumer Affairs that licenses and regulates such businesses as locksmiths, repossession firms and private investigators. He also appeared to have a firearm permit that expired in 2001.
Authorities said he began firing about 4:30 p.m. Saturday in a parking lot near Macy's. Frightened shoppers ran and store owners locked their doors as police arrived at the upscale, open-air mall.
Given the deadly shooting at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school the day before, where a gunman killed 20 children and 6 adults, McGill said he was terrified when he got the initial call.
All he could think, he said, was "Oh my gosh, here we go."
Some bicycle officers were already in the area — part of an effort to curb theft at the mall during the holiday shopping season — and police were able to find the suspect almost immediately, McGill said. Gurrola then put his gun down and his hands in the air and was arrested, McGill said.
McGill said Newport Beach police train for active-shooter scenarios at various locations and began having monthly meetings with Fashion Island security about eight months ago. He credited a "great relationship" with security teams at the mall for Saturday's quick response — police knew their mall counterparts personally and how they would react, he said.
McGill also commended the police officers for following their training and reacting as they were supposed to.
"They all see thousands of people running away from a madman with a gun, which is what we want them to do, and my guys are the guys running toward him," McGill said. "Our guys did exactly what they are trained to do."
The Connecticut incident wasn't the only high-profile shooting in the U.S. last week. On Tuesday, a gunman killed two people and wounded a third at a suburban Portland, Ore., mall that, like Fashion Island, was packed with holiday shoppers.
On a drizzly Sunday, Fashion Island was once again crowded. Bill and Patty Zimmerman returned with their 12-year-old daughter, Molly, to finish the shopping that was interrupted Saturday afternoon.
Bill Zimmerman and Molly were in Macy's when Molly heard people Saturday yell "Shooter!" They ran and took refuge in the back room of a nearby Victoria's Secret.
Zimmerman said the family felt comfortable coming to the mall Sunday, but Molly said she was still surprised — and shaken — by the previous afternoon.
"This is like the safest mall," she said.
Cindy Nahm, 25, who also stopped by Fashion Island on Sunday, said that shootings in public places were frightening to think about.
"You'd think a school or mall would be safe," Nahm said. "But you can't always be paranoid. You have to go out and get your shopping done or go to school."
Newport Beach Police Lt. Jon Lewis stressed there was "no connection" between Gurrola's alleged acts and the Connecticut shooting. But McGill said he knew just how badly the situation at Fashion Island could have ended, just how easily Newport Beach could have been the next gathering spot for national media.
"It scares the heck out of me," he said. "The police — we keep preparing and keep preparing because this makes us nervous. We can't be 100% prepared, but we're constantly working on it."

The suspect, identified as Romero Roberto Moya, a 33-year-old man from Heflin, was killed by Oxford police after leading authorities on a vehicle chase through two counties.

The fourth victim in the initial shooting is Moya's infant son, who survived the shooting and is in stable condition at a Georgia hospital, according to Cleburne County Sheriff's Investigator Dennis Green.

The chase began Saturday, Dec. 15 after Heflin police officers responded to a domestic violence call at the Guzman Trailer Park on Highway 9 in Cleburne County.

Officers discovered three gunshot victims at the scene, now identified as Moya's younger brothers, ages 17, 23, and 26 years old. Police got a description of the suspect and gave chase, following Moya for 25 miles into Oxford.

Authorities say Moya then crashed his vehicle, shot and injured Heflin police officer Jackie Stovall, carjacked another vehicle and continued to flee.

The chase ended when Moya crashed into another vehicle on Beck Road and Highway 48. When Moya exited his vehicle, the Oxford Special Response Team shot and killed him.

Jackie Stovall, the police officer who was shot during the chase, is said to be improving from his injury in the hospital. The bullet from the shot his a main artery, but a State Trooper on the scene applied pressure on it until he could be transported to the hospital.

"(CBS/AP) LONGMONT, Colo. - Authorities said the Colorado gunman accused of killing three people, including his ex-girlfriend, and then himself on Tuesday was released from jail on domestic violence charges just hours before the attack.
Weld County Sheriff John Cook said 31-year-old Daniel Sanchez was arrested Saturday on charges of domestic violence, kidnapping and false arrest for allegedly holding his ex-girlfriend, 25-year-old Beatriz Cintora-Silva, against her will after their relationship ended.
He was released on bail from the Boulder County jail at 10 p.m. Monday and drove to the home where Cintora-Silva had taken refuge with her sister and brother-in-law, Cook said.
"He shot out the back door," Cook said. "He shot that out then gained entry into the house."
The victims included the Cintora-Silva's sister, 22-year-old Maria Cintora-Silva, and the sister's husband, 32-year-old Max Ojeda. All were found dead in a home in unincorporated Weld County outside Longmont, about 35 miles north of Denver.
Authorities said Beatriz Cintora-Silva called 911 shortly after 4 a.m. to report shots fired. The 911 dispatcher heard her cry, "No, no, no," followed by a gunshot.
Sanchez took the phone, told the dispatcher he killed three people and that he was going to kill himself, authorities said. The dispatcher then heard a single shot followed by silence.
The bodies of Ojeda and his wife were found in one bedroom. His sister-in-law and Sanchez were found in another, Cook said.
Authorities found a .45-caliber Glock handgun near Sanchez's body and 16 spent shell casings around the house, Cook said. Investigators were still examining the house and might find more.
Cook said Sanchez had two magazines for the gun, and each held 13 rounds of ammunition."

"LONGMONT, Colo. — A man shot three people before turning the gun on himself in this rural area northwest of Denver early Tuesday morning, investigators say.
A 911 operator received a call at about 4 a.m. from a woman who blurted out the address of a home in the 400-space LongView mobile home park, investigators say.
"The dispatcher heard 'No, no, no,' and then gunshots," said Sgt. Tim Schwartz with the Weld County Sheriff's Office. "A male party then picks up the phone and says he's going to kill himself. The dispatcher hears another gunshot."

Deputies raced to the trailer home where they found two men and two women dead inside.
The gunshots woke neighbor Manuel Nunez, 58, who ran into the living room to see what had happened. Nunez's home backs onto an open lot across the street from the cream-colored mobile home where the shooting happened.
"I heard pop, pop, pop," Nunez said. "I looked out the window but I didn't see nothing."

Schwartz said investigators are still seeking a motive and the identities of the four dead. He says more information about the incident would be released later Tuesday.
"It's heartbreaking," he said. "It's just tough all the way around."
According to deputies, three of the victims were adults. Their exact ages are unknown at this time.
A press briefing was planned for later Tuesday."
